Before you start...
Here's what you'll need:
Tape Measure
To take measurements
Notepad or phone
To record measurements
flashlight
For inspecting tight or dark spaces
Step One:
Measure the opening width
Measure the inside width of the compartment where you plan to install the drawer or bin. Measure at multiple points (front, middle, and back) as openings may not be perfectly square.
Record the smallest measurement – this ensures the unit will fit through the entire depth of the opening.
Step two:
Measure the opening height
Measure the inside height from the floor of the compartment to the top. Again, check at multiple points and record the smallest measurement.
Step Three:
Measure the depth
Measure from the front edge of the opening to the back wall of the compartment. This determines how far the drawer or bin can extend into the space.
Step Four:
Measure the bottom space (if applicable)
Measure bottom space clearance to ensure the bottom drawer clears the lip of the compartment.
Step Five:
Check for Obstructions (critical)
This is the most important step to prevent installation problems:
- Hinges: Check if door hinges protrude into the opening. Measure from the hinge to the opposite wall to determine your actual usable width.
- Latches and locks: Note any latch mechanisms that may reduce clearance.
- Existing hardware: Look for brackets, bolts, or mounting points that could interfere.
- Uneven surfaces: Check for welds, seams, or irregularities that reduce clearance (See Step 4)
- Door swing: Ensure the door can open fully without hitting the extended drawer.
Pro tip: Subtract at least 1/4" from your measurements to account for any irregularities and ensure smooth operation.
Step Six:
Consider Drawer Height & Number of Drawers
Decide how may drawers are needed and the height of each drawer.
Please note that any drawer height over 7" will have an open space in the front above the drawer. For example, a 10" drawer height will have 3" of open space above the drawer.
Step Seven:
Double-Check Your Measurements
Measure twice, order once! Verify all measurements before placing your order.
